Akamai: A Simpler Alternative to Complex Cloud Providers

November 27, 2024

Previously known as Linode, Akamai's goal is to make "cloud computing simple, accessible, and affordable.”

There are other cloud computing services that are well-suited for medium to large enterprises, but if you're just looking to run your own web servers, then Akamai is an excellent choice in the sense that account setup is easy, and there's virtually zero learning curve to start a server.

In my experience, the interface is simple and focused. When you're trying to learn about servers, how to configure them, maintain them etc, it helps when you can concentrate on learning about server administration without being overwhelmed by the platform itself.

In addition to virtual machines, Akamai offers features like additional volumes, object storage, and more. I've pointed my domains to Akamai, and I manage DNS there. The platform provides all the essential tools you'll likely need.

I've enjoyed using Akamai for my personal projects, and recommend it. My intentions aren't to discourage others from learning how to use say AWS or Azure. It would be valuable to get exposure to both, and eventually gain proficiency in at least one. If you're just starting out though, and learning about servers, then consider Akamai. It may be just what you need to get started.
